Corboy & Demetrio Co-founder Thomas Demetrio created the Lawyers Lend-A-Hand Award of Excellence in 1994 while he was President of the Chicago Bar Association.  Each year, he funds the award, which recognizes outstanding youth mentoring programs.
 
The Lawyers Lend-A-Hand to Youth Program, which administers Tom’s award, was created by The Chicago Bar Association and the Chicago Bar Foundation in 1995 in dedication to the lasting memory and generosity of the Honorable Judge Abraham Lincoln Marovitz.

​Corboy & Demetrio Partner Michael K. Demetrio and Corboy & Demetrio CFO Marcy Twardak took part in the 17th Annual Lend a Shoulder Day, hosted by the Chairmen's Advisory Council of the Big Shoulders Fund.   Mike visited Academy of St. Benedict and Marcy visited Holy Angels in Chicago.

The Big Shoulders Fund creates brighter futures for nearly 20,000 Chicago inner-city students attending 77 Catholic schools.   Marcy and Mike saw not only the schools and classes in action but had the opportunity to meet and engage with students. They had the unique opportunity to see firsthand how Big Shoulders Fund schools, 64 elementary and 13 high schools in the city’s most underserved neighborhoods, helps the nearly 20,000 students.  ​

Corboy & Demetrio Partner Philip Harnett (Flip) Corboy, Jr. was not only a sponsor of the Legal Assistance Foundation 50th Anniversary Luncheon on June 17th, he and his wife Margaret matched all donations made during the live fundraising drive at the luncheon, which totaled more than $32,000, turning the overall fundraising effort into more than $64,000 and far surpassing LAF’s goal.

Corboy & Demetrio presented Cluster Tutoring with the 2016 Thomas A. Demetrio Award of Excellence at the Lawyers Lend-A-Hand Annual Spring Awards Dinner on May 4, 2016.  Cluster Tutoring accepted the $10,000 award from Rita Planera, a longtime Corboy & Demetrio employee and Lend-A-Hand Board Member.

The award, named in honor of Thomas Demetrio, President and Co-founder of Corboy & Demetrio, is given annually to tutoring and mentoring programs that impact the lives of underprivileged youth.

Background on Thomas Demetrio and Lawyers Lend-A-Hand:
In 1992, the Lend-A-Hand Award of Excellence was created by Thomas A. Demetrio while he was President of the Chicago Bar Association, with a desire to impact the lives of Chicago’s underprivileged children by recognizing the efforts of exceptional tutor/mentor programs in the Chicago communities.  From this Award was born the Lend-A-Hand Program.

In honor of Brain Injury Awareness Month in March, Corboy & Demetrio, which is a longtime supporter of the Brain Injury Association of Illinois, recognizes the good work BIAI does to help bring awareness to the fact that more than 2.5 million people in the United States sustain traumatic brain injury each year.

Also, Brain Injury Awareness of America and its chapters, including Illinois, has designated March to help support the millions of Americans who live with brain trauma and injuries.  According to BIAI, more than 5.3 million Americans live with traumatic brain injury.
