Corboy & Demetrio has announced the recipient of the 2019 Thomas A. Demetrio Award of Excellence is Chicago Lights Tutoring, which provides students at the Fourth Presbyterian Church of Chicago with one-on-one tutoring and mentoring services. The Award was presented at the Chicago Bar Association Lawyers Lend-A-Hand Annual Spring Awards Dinner on April 25, 2019.
“Chicago Lights is a home for me and so many others,” said Devon Collins, a student at Christ the King High School, who spoke at the dinner and who has received tutoring from Chicago Lights since the first grade. “I am so happy I went to Chicago Lights tutoring because they inspire me to be the best that I can be,” Collins added. The Award, named in honor of Thomas A. Demetrio, President and Co-founder of Corboy & Demetrio, and funded by him, is given annually to tutoring and mentoring programs that impact the lives of underprivileged youth in Chicago.

Corboy & Demetrio Partner Daniel S. Kirschner will present The Robert H. Kirschner Award for Global Activism, created in memorial to Dan’s late father, to Peter Kovler at the Heartland Alliance Marjorie Kovler Center Benefit on May 14. The Kirschner Award honors Dr. Kirschner’s human rights work both domestically and abroad. Dr. Kirschner was an internationally recognized forensic pathologist and well-regarded authority on child abuse, torture, police brutality, and the death penalty.
Dr. Kirschner's human rights work took him to more than a dozen foreign countries where torture, extra-judicial executions and mass killings occurred. Through the Kovler Center, Dr. Kirschner trained pro bono health providers to conduct forensic evaluations of torture survivors, provided ongoing consultation to Kovler Center staff and volunteers, and assisted Kovler Center client’s in the asylum-seeking process. Dan Kirschner is serving on the Host Committee for the Benefit, at which Hillary Rodham Clinton will serve as Keynote Speaker. Corboy & Demetrio is proud to serve as a Gold Sponsor of the 2019 Benefit. The Marjorie Kovler Center is a treatment program devoted to the recovery and healing of individuals, families, and communities affected by torture. The comprehensive model of care includes mental health, medical care, case management, and interpretation and translation services. Its treatment approach is based on the key principles of empowerment, community building, and multidisciplinary services. |
