American Needs You(ANY) Illinois, which provides mentorship and career preparation for low-income, first generation college students, was the recipient of the 2017 Thomas A. Demetrio Award of Excellence. The annual award, funded by Thomas Demetrio, was presented to the group at the Lawyers Lend-a-Hand Annual Spring Awards Dinner. The award, named in honor of Thomas Demetrio, President and Co-founder of Corboy & Demetrio, is given annually to tutoring and mentoring programs that impact the lives of underprivileged youth.
Background on Thomas Demetrio and Lawyers Lend-A-Hand In 1992, the Lend-A-Hand Award of Excellence was created by Thomas A. Demetrio while he was President of the Chicago Bar Association(CBA), with a desire to impact the lives of Chicago’s underprivileged children by recognizing the efforts of exceptional tutor/mentor programs in the Chicago communities. From this Award was born the Lend-A-Hand Program. The Chicago Bar Foundation(CBF), with the leadership of the CBA, initiated the Lend-A-Hand Program in 1995, and it has continued to evolve ever since. The CBA and CBF created the Lend-A-Hand program in dedication to the lasting memory and generosity of the Honorable Abraham Lincoln Marovitz, Judge "Abe." Thomas Demetrio is a Life Fellow of the Chicago Bar Foundation and served on its Board of Directors from 1994 to 1996. He has served on the Lend-A-Hand Advisory Board since 1994. Corboy & Demetrio is a proud Patron sponsor of Kennedy Forum Illinois' Bending Towards Justice: A Summit for Mental Health Equity, which takes place on Tues., Jan. 16th at Hilton Chicago, 720 South Michigan Avenue. Speakers include: Patrick J. Kennedy, David Axelrod, Olympian Michael Phelps and IL Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke.
The event will include a Leadership Breakfast to honor those who have undertaken the journey to social change in pursuit of mental health justice. A daytime Community Forum will convene the best and the brightest and brave, and will address the question Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. posed 50 years ago - “Where do we go from here?” https://thekennedyforum.org/event/the-kennedy-forum-annual-meeting-2018/ For more than 15 years, Corboy & Demetrio employees have made thousands of dollars in charitable contributions through “Jeans Fridays”, a program that encourages staff to make donations in exchange for wearing jeans on Fridays.
Staff members Janice Fleming and Dana Ligue run the fundraiser, gather information about the charities that are proposed by co-workers, choosing the charity of the week, collecting donations, and delivering the money to the charities. “It’s a ‘no-brainer’ as the charities we choose have a personal connection to someone. Plus, who doesn’t want to dress down on a Friday?” Janice said. Throughout the year, Corboy & Demetrio staff propose charities that they are personally interested in for the funds to go to. The firm usually donates to five to six charities per year through this fundraiser. “Jeans Fridays” can result in a donation of anywhere from $300 to $700 for a charity. Some of the recent “Jeans Friday” charities have included Special Olympics, the Les Turner ALS Foundation, Lurie Children’s Research Fund, and the Ovarian Cancer Symptom Awareness Organization. “A lot of companies do this,” Dana said. “But what is unique at Corboy & Demetrio is that everyone has a personal connection to the organization we are donating.” In its biggest fundraiser to date, Corboy & Demetrio raised more than $1000 for the Monarch Center for Autism in early 2017. The Monarch Center for Autism is a living and learning community for adults and adolescents with Autism. An upcoming “Jeans Friday” is being planned for the charity, Cocktails and Chemo, an organization founded to provide a support group for caregivers and spouses of cancer patients. “I met the founder at an event and was completely moved by her story and the organization that she founded. I immediately decided to use it as a ‘Jeans Friday’ fundraiser. That is the best part about this fundraiser; you get to help someone to make a difference for a cause they really care about,” Janice said.
