Philip H. Corboy
1924-2012
Philip H. Corboy inspired all who knew him and impacted the lives of thousands who did not know him because of his generosity and dedication to community service. During his lifetime, Mr. Corboy served as President of the Chicago Bar Association, President of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, Chair of the Section of Litigation of the American Bar Association and Chair of the American Bar Association’s Special Committee on Medical Professional Liability.
Mr. Corboy served as general counsel for the Illinois Democratic Party and served on the boards of directors of business, legal and charitable groups, and was a member of task forces for courts, judicial and medical-related entities.
Mr. Corboy was also active in national and international associations, including the Inner Circle of Advocates, International Academy of Trial Lawyers, American College of Trial Lawyers, International Society of Barristers, American Board of Trial Advocates, and American Association for Justice.
In 1983, the Philip H. Corboy Foundation was created by Mr. Corboy to support numerous non-profit organizations in the Chicago area that he had long supported. Mr. Corboy was legendary in his practice of personal injury law, but he was also legendary in the charitable contributions he made to his community.
In 2009, Philip H. Corboy and his wife, Mary Dempsey, made the largest single gift ever to the Loyola University Chicago School of Law. In recognition of the gift, Loyola renamed its law school building the Philip H. Corboy Law Center. The gift continues to be used to support renovation, faculty hiring and scholarships for law students.
