Kohut is a Lake Bluff resident and trial lawyer who has been honored with the designation of “Illinois Super Lawyer, Rising Star,” for the last five years.  She was also named one of “40 Illinois Attorneys Under Forty to Watch” by the Law Bulletin Publishing Company in 2007 in recognition of her success.

“I am honored to be installed as the 1^st Vice President of one of the oldest women’s bar organizations in the country,” Kohut said

Kohut along with new and returning officers will be sworn in on June 7 at the association’s 98^th Annual Installation Dinner, which is one of the largest annual celebrations within the Chicago legal community, with over 700 judges, attorneys, corporate supporters, and prominent leaders attending each year.

This year, the oath of office for the incoming President will be administered by Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne M. Burke, and Cook County Circuit Court Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans will swear in the Officers and Directors of the WBAI.  This year’s dinner will also include keynote speaker, Retired Colonel Jill Morgenthaler.  Colonel Morgenthaler served as the Governor’s Deputy Chief of Staff for Public Safety and Homeland Security Advisor. 

The mission of the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois includes promoting, protecting and fostering the interests and welfare of women lawyers.

Corboy & Demetrio Employees Take Part in Misericordia Annual Candy Days

Corboy & Demetrio staffers stood on the corner of Washington and Dearborn Streets, passing out information about Misericordia and candy in exchange for donations to the Chicago non-profit organization.   It’s the 12^thyear that Corboy & Demetrio employees have taken part in Misericordia’s Annual Candy Days.  Misericordia provides an array of services to more than 600 children and adults with mild to profound disabilities who live at Misericordia on the city’s far northside.  Corboy & Demetrio Managing Partner Bob Bingle and Terri LoBianco have organized our law firm’s team of Candy Day volunteers for several years.

The Center for Disability & Elder Law’s 2012 Winter Benefit held in Chicago was a huge success.  The event, held on February 22, featured the Chicago Bar Association’s Barristers Big Band, The Scales of Justice.  Presented at the annual event were Volunteer of the Year Award,  Corporate Partner of the Year Award and the Impact Award.  Corboy & Demetrio founding partner is a longtime Board Member.  Corboy & Demetrio attorney Matthew T. Jenkins is currently the President of the Board of Directors. 

Zack’s family will honor his life by giving a party to 137 children in need at an event called, “Zack Tran’s 15^th Birthday Bash” on Saturday, April 21.

The children are part of Aprendiendo Jugando, an after-school program for low-income, at-risk Hispanic children in grades 1-5 at Hawthorn Elementary School in Vernon Hills.  The event will be held at Party Fantasy in Mundelein, IL, which will provide bouncy houses, dancing, rock climbing and go carts for the children.  Many of Zachary Tran’s relatives and friends will help with the party.

Michelle and Jayson Tran were represented by Corboy & Demetrio partner Shawn  S. Kasserman in a civil lawsuit against the manufacturer of the soccer goal, the soccer association and the park district.  The manufacturer, association and park district agreed to compensate the Tran family $3 million and to stop selling that design of goal as part of a settlement.

KID was founded in 1998 by the parents of sixteen-month-old Danny Keysar, and has become a legislative force in Illinois and nationally in improving safety laws affecting children’s products.  Corboy & Demetrio partner Shawn S. Kasserman represented the parents of Danny Keysar in a civil lawsuit against the manufacturer of the portable crib.  Kasserman is on the board of KID.

The event will feature a tasting menu from the top chefs in Chicago, and is a wonderful event.

Corboy & Demetrio employees took to the streets on Friday, March 16 to help raise money for Mercy Home for Boys and Girls as part of the Mercy Home Shamrocks for Kids event.   Twenty one of our employees stood outside the office of Corboy & Demetrio on the corner of Dearborn and Washington Streets in Chicago collecting money from passersby and giving them back a shamrock sticker as a thank you. The donations will help Mercy home provide services to kids who are abused, neglected and at risk.

Philip H. Corboy is an Honorary Co-Chair of the benefit; Thomas A. Demetrio is on the Board of Directors; and Corboy & Demetrio’s Matthew T. Jenkins is CDEL’s new President of the Board of Directors. The non-profit organization provides legal services to elderly and low-income residents in Chicago and outlying Cook County, Illinois. It served more than 2,100 clients last year alone.

“The Winter Benefit is a major fundraising effort by CDEL, and I am enthusiastic that the legal community will embrace CDEL as it has done in the past by participating in this amazing event,” Matthew T. Jenkins said.

The Winter Benefit will feature sumptuous hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, networking and the rhythms of The Scales of Justice, an ensemble of the Chicago Bar Association’s Barristers Big Band. CDEL will also present its Volunteer of the Year Award, Impact Award and Corporate Partner of the Year Award.

“We are excited to host this year’s benefit at Baker & McKenzie’s beautiful new offices in the Blue Cross/Blue Shield building, overlooking the Chicago River and city skyline,” said Addison Braendel, CDEL President and co-chair of Baker & McKenzie’s global funds sub-group. “It is an excellent venue for people to mingle, enjoy the views and listen to the music of The Scales of Justice Combo.”

This year, the “Light Up The Loop” Benefit is chaired by Theresa Jaffe, Principal of Theresa Jaffe Consulting. “We are delighted to have Theresa heading up our Winter Benefit,” said Braendel. All of us at CDEL know of the outstanding volunteer work she has done for the Chicago Bar Foundation to support legal aid agencies through the Investing in Justice Campaign. Theresa is a marketing and business development thought leader who has a proven track record of generating growth, visibility and profitability for organizations. We are thrilled that she is helping CDEL reach a new plateau.”
